CAF files originate from Apple's audio ecosystem. Most users first encounter the format when they receive an iMessage voice message and want to play or forward it outside of an Apple device. iOS developers, GarageBand, and Logic Pro users also create CAF files. What happens during the conversion?
CAF is a container that can hold various audio codecs. The most common CAF files, iMessage voice messages, contain OPUS-compressed audio at 24,000 Hz. Other CAF files can contain uncompressed PCM (e.g., from Xcode projects), Apple Lossless (ALAC), or AAC. When converting to MP3, the audio content of the CAF file is first decoded and then re-encoded using the MP3 codec (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3). Because MP3 is a lossy format, some audio information is lost during conversion. However, at high bitrates (192 kbps and above), this loss of quality is imperceptible to most listeners. If the CAF file already contains lossy compressed audio (such as Opus or AAC), transcoding takes place, meaning the audio material is converted from one lossy format to another. This is hardly noticeable with voice messages, but it can lead to audible quality loss with music. In this case, conversion to a lossless format like FLAC would be more suitable.
